Connecting the dots in tailings management.
The Intelligent Miner organised and hosted a workshop in June 2026 with practitioners and experts from various fields within better tailings management
Better outcomes depend upon understanding the connections between the many decisions, disciplines and people involved.
In this video and accompanying workbook, Carly Leonida is joined by Trevor Sparks, Brian Ayres, Karen Chovan and Tabatha Chavez Matus to explore how tailings management begins long before material reaches a storage facility. Together, they examine the links between mineral processing, engineering, governance, closure and innovation, showing how decisions made upstream can influence performance throughout the life of a mine.
The discussion takes a systems view of mine waste, exploring topics including filtration, water stewardship, dry stacking, governance, artificial intelligence, waste valorisation and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. Throughout, he emphasis is on connecting expertise across disciplines to support better decision-making and more resilient outcomes.
